What
is the internet?
The internet is a collection of computers all linked together
around the world. It is not run by the government and anybody
with the appropriate software and knowledge can establish
themselves as part of that link anywhere in the world. A link
is normally an ISP or host company like TWGNET who have 24
hour support to make sure everything is up and running 24/7.
What is an ISP?
An ISP that is an 'Internet Service Provider' is a link in
the internet network which you can connect to via your telephone
line from your computer, you will need to be registered with
an ISP to do this. There are a number of companies here in
the UK who provide the ISP service (including BT) and charges
and levels of service do differ a great deal, so do shop around.
Where does my internet website exist?

rack in London which is linked to the internet network of
computers and because of it's unique address (website name)
is accessible from any PC/Apple computer anywhere in the world.
How does my computer find a website?
When you type in a known website address into your computers
browser software and press go or enter your modem passes this
information down your telephone line to your ISP (Internet
Service Provider) where it is pointed at the hosting computer
by the fastest route wherever it is situated around the world.
It will in effect travel through many computers, telephone
lines, wireless telephone systems and satellite telecommunication
systems until it arrives at the hosting computer, wherever
it is situated around the world. Not bad considering it only
takes a minute or two!
What is a search engine?
A search engine is a facility for searching the network for
websites with the information you require using keywords or
phrases, www.google.com is one example. Think of a search
engine as like looking through the Yellow Pages or any other
directory - the only difference is the internet is a massive
directory and there is nothing to match it!
Will
my website be found?
Once you have a website it needs to be registered with the
search engines who catalogue websites ready for searching
